THE HOUSTON SPCA SHELTERS GALVESTON DOGS
FROM TROPICAL STORM EDOUARD
(HOUSTON August 4, 2008) The Houston SPCA is providing temporary housing for 15 large adult dogs from the Galveston Island Humane Society. The dogs were transported to the HSPCA at 3:00 p.m. today so they would have adequate shelter from Tropical Storm Edouard. The storm is expected to make landfall around 10:00 am Tuesday morning as a strong Tropical Storm or a Category 1 Hurricane with heavy rain, flooding and high winds.
The adult adoptable dogs at the Galveston Island Humane Society were housed in runs that were covered, but not inside the building. When the storm blinds are closed in this area, the air flow becomes limited causing a potential danger to the animals. Executive Director, Caroline Dorsett believes that if they lose power during the storm, heat could become a life threatening issue for these animals. “We feel very fortunate to have a partnership with the Houston SPCA and to work with them for the safety of the animals on the island,” says Dorsett.
The Houston SPCA is also working with the local chapter of the American Red Cross to address animal issues that may come up in any human shelters that may be established. And, Houston SPCA Chief Investigator Charles Jantzen has all field service staff ready to respond as needed and on-call during the overnight hours.
